MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota Democrats were fired up at an evening rally where former President Bill Clinton campaigned for Senate candidate Al Franken.

Several thousand people gathered at the Minneapolis Convention Center.

Clinton told the crowd his wife Hillary had sent him to Minnesota because "Al Franken's a good man. And he was your friend in good times and bad when you were president. And you oughta go there and stand up for him. So I said yes ma'am. So Hillary sent me and I'm here."

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Al Franken shared the stage with Clinton.

As they waited for the main event, a succession of Democratic speakers urged party members to work hard the next five days; between now and the election, to get out the vote.

Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak says no one should be lulled into complacency despite polls that have shown Obama holding a sizable lead over Republican presidential candidate John McCain.
