Local kids 'bridge' gap for needy neighbors
"I have a nine-piece kitchen set," one student said while walking to the parking lot of Nativity of Mary School in Bloomington. Call it a parade with a purpose. Friday morning at Nativity of Mary saw the completion of a service project teachers call a spirited success. "Our theme for Catholic Schools Week is celebrate service. We didn't realize how much they would take the ball and run with it," teacher Jane Wagemaker said. But run with it they did. And bags of towels, boxes of sheets, and tables and chairs added up to a truck full of supplies for local non-profit Bridging. The helps needy families with home furnishings and is busier than ever. "We need this stuff so bad," Bridging founder Fran Heitzman said. "I get so excited when I see these little kids. They get it when I tell them there's kids sleeping on the floor." "The kids, when they heard Fran speak last week, there were tears in their eyes and they just really wanted to help out others," principal Barb Castagna said. "They really get it and they really come through. This is wonderful to see kids that want to help somebody," Heitzman added. On this January morning, there are plenty of cold hands, but many warm hearts. Click here to read more about Bridging.
