44-year-old Jeffrey Logan was always pushing his brother to do better. "He would always coach me on trying to be a better father," remembered Charles Walker.

So Logan's family is not surprised that Logan died doing his best. "He paid a heavy price for protecting his own," Walker said.

Family members said Logan and his cousin were leaving the American Legion on Concordia Avenue early Saturday morning when somebody tried to rob his cousin.

Logan's family said Jeffrey stepped in to help and was shot and killed. "No one should have to pay in this kind of way," said Logan's sister, Sharon Comer.

Logan's family said he excelled at Highland Park High School years ago, lettering in three sports, even though he was born with only one hand.

"I never had an excuse for not trying to succeed," Walker said. "He'd always say, 'look, I've got one hand, I can do this. I know you can do that.' He instilled that in me."

St. Paul police have arrested three people in connection with the murder.

"It was senseless. They hurt a lot of people," Comer said. "I don't know if it was for a dollar, or two or three. But it wasn't worth it."
