Driver charged in fatal crash while fleeing police
Officials charged 33-year-old Tito Fonzio Campbell with criminal vehicular homicide Monday in the death of 48-year-old Shoua Vang. Vang was killed Saturday evening after being struck by Campbell who was fleeing police. Roseville Police say the chain of events started just before 7 p.m. when Campbell assaulted a woman and stole her car from the 600 block of Highway 36. A Roseville officer pursued the vehicle down Highway 36, but eventually discontinued the chase because of the suspect's aggressive and dangerous driving at speeds up to 90 mph. A short time later, the stolen vehicle was involved in a crash in St. Paul near I-35E and Larpenteur Avenue. Shoua Vang was the front seat passenger and her husband, Zong Xiong, was driving in the car that was struck. They were taken to Regions Hospital. Shoua later died from her injuries at the hospital. Her husband was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. An 10-year-old boy was found in the stolen vehicle. He was taken to Regions Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Police say the child was Campbell's son. After medical treatment the boy was released to his mother who was not involved in the incident. Investigators say Campbell was intoxicated at the time of the accident. He was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries and then booked into the Ramsey County Jail. The woman who was assaulted and had her car stolen was not seriously hurt and did not require medical attention. Campbell also faces charges of fleeing police and driving while intoxicated. He remains behind bars at the Ramsey County Law Enforcement Center with a $1,000,000 bond. (Copyright 2009 by KARE. All Rights Reserved.)
