FARGO, N.D. -- Runoff from heavy rains this week in the southern Red River Valley is now projected to push the river in Fargo-Moorhead to just 2 feet below major flood stage.
The National Weather Service is forecasting the river to peak at 28 feet Sunday night. Before Thursday's rainfall, the river was forecast to crest at about 23 feet -- 2 feet below moderate flood stage.
At 28 feet, some vehicle and pedestrian bridges are flooded, along with some campgrounds at Lindenwood Park. Park District Director Roger Gress says some diking might also be needed at Edgewood Golf Course. The planned July 4 opening of the flood-damaged course might also be delayed.
Earlier this spring, Fargo residents fought off two crests of the Red River -- the first at a record 40.82 feet and the second at 34 feet.
