BESSEMER TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) -- Authorities in the western Upper Peninsula of Michigan are evacuating people within half a mile of a rupture in a natural gas line near Bessemer .
The Gogebic County sheriff's department says the rupture happened Tuesday in Bessemer Township. They say there's been no explosion and no one has been reported hurt. The site is about 10 miles east-northeast of Ironwood on the Michigan-Wisconsin line.
KQDS-TV in Duluth, Minn., says crews from Xcel Energy were working to fix the 16-inch pipeline.
There's no immediate word on what caused the break or what company owns the line.
Witnesses tell WLUC-TV in Marquette the leak sounded like a jet engine and could be heard up to a mile away.
