Local pub offers pedal-powered fun
Click here for entertainment news & info. There are bars, and then there's the Pedal Pub. This unique bicycle seats ten people, looks like a bar, and is one of the few ways you can 'drink and drive' in Minnesota. "Well, my husband's in seventh heaven, because he's a biker and he likes beer," says Sue Hambly of White Bear Lake. "So he said, 'where can I go that I can combine the two?', so, for a couple of hours, we think we're gonna have a gas." The Pedal Pub is a Dutch-made bicycle/bar. They're wildly popular on the streets of Amsterdam, where Pedal Pub owner Eric Olson first saw them. He imported one nearly two years ago and started the first Pedal Pub service in North America. Now, Olson has three of the bikes and a booming business. "I thought, this is just cool," says Olson. "I'm a beer drinker, not a biker, but this is just perfect for me." The pubs allow drinking by passengers, as long as there's a sober driver behind the wheel. They follow routes throughout both Minneapolis and St. Paul, giving renters the opportunity to see the Cities' sights while enjoying a cold, adult beverage. Rental rates start at $150/hour. "I think it's a hoot. I hope they can expand their business, because I think it's a riot," says Hambly, whose friends and family rented the Pedal Pub on Monday to celebrate a series of birthdays in June.
