A St. Paul police officer has filed a lawsuit claiming his employer repeatedly retaliated against him after he testified in a sexual harassment investigation.

Former gang unit member Derrick Boone claims Chief John Harrington demoted him to a patrol officer, denied him overtime and took other retaliatory measures.

Boone says it all happened after he was asked to give testimony in a workplace investigation into alleged sexual harassment in 2001.

The lawsuit claims fellow officers "regularly used racially offensive language in the workplace." Boone says he also "witnessed instances of gender bias and sexual harassment" against at least one female member of the department.

The suit was filed in federal court in Minneapolis. St. Paul police spokesman Sgt. Paul Schnell declined comment on pending litigation.
