Senator Amy Klobuchar is urging changes to the popular 'Cash for Clunkers' program, saying reimbursement delays and approval of applications have burdened auto dealers and consumers in Minnesota.
Klobuchar sent a letter to Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood asking him to take immediate steps to more efficiently implement the "Cash for Clunkers" program. She maintains dealers and purchasers are still experiencing substantial delays in many aspects of the program.
"While I'm encouraged to see that dealerships are selling more vehicles now than they have in recent months, the Department of Transportation must take additional steps so that the 'Cash for Clunkers' program begins to operate as smoothly as possible," said Klobuchar.
Even though Minnesota has ranked in the top ten in Cash for Clunkers participation, some Minnesotans have had trouble meeting the program's requirements due to a discrepancy between the federal program and Minnesota state policy regarding taxes and vehicle registration fees.
