GOP lawmaker: Slot machines could buy new Vikings stadium
Click here for more sports stories ST. PAUL, Minn. -- A Republican legislator says allowing more slot machines is the best way to get the millions of dollars standing between the Minnesota Vikings and a new stadium. Rep. Tom Hackbarth of Cedar said Monday he would try to amend the state constitution to permit slot machines at two Twin Cities-area horse racing tracks. The Racino idea is hardly new and has had little luck at the Capitol. But Hackbarth says voters deserve a chance to decide whether it's the way to pay for a new Vikings stadium. The team is under lease at the Metrodome until 2011. John McCarthy of the Minnesota Indian Gaming Association questions whether gambling is a reliable enough revenue stream to pay back as much as $50 million a year in construction debt.
