MINNEAPOLIS -- A Minneapolis man beat his son and burned him with an iron before the boy hid in the family's oven according to charges filed Monday.

William T. Hurley, 23, of Minneapolis is charged with one count of malicious punishment of a child and is in custody in Hennepin County.

The criminal complaint alleges that Hurley turned on the oven where his 10-year-old son was hiding.  The boy climbed out of the oven when it began to get warm.

Officers were called to an apartment in the 2000 block of Elliot Avenue last Friday on a child abuse call.  When they arrived they found a 10-year-old boy who said his father had hit him with an extension cord and burned him with an iron.

According to the criminal complaint, the 10-year-old boy's father became upset with him because he was in his mother's bedroom.  The boy told police that Hurley punched him.

The boy then hid under his bed but Hurley "threatened to kill him if he didn't come out," according to the complaint.

The boy told police that Hurley then took a heated iron and burned him on the leg and arm and whipped him with an extension cord.

The boy tried to run out of the apartment but was brought back into the apartment by his mother.

Hurley threatened to beat the 10-year-old in front of the officers and had to be restrained.

Hurley is currently in custody in Hennepin County Jail.
