NORTHFIELD, Minn. (AP) -- The Minnesota Department of Administration says a Northfield High School teacher who publicly posted test scores was violating state law protecting student data.
According to the Star Tribune, the teacher says he thought he was using a common motivational tactic, and the Minnesota Association of School Administrators director says the state advisory opinion seems like an "extreme interpretation" that will change a lot of common practices.
Northfield school leaders told the teacher to stop the practice after a parent complained, but the parent went on to ask for the state opinion anyway.
The state opinion is nonbinding, and carries no penalties for the school. The teacher has not been disciplined.
