Capitol coalition aims to make streets safe
SAINT PAUL--A new coalition promoting safer streets unveiled the "Complete Streets" bills on Monday February 8th at the Minnesota State Capitol. "In the past decade, more than 500 bicyclists and pedestrians have been killed, and another 20,000 injured on Minnesota roads," DFL-Representative Mike Obermueller said. The coalition features bipartisan support from 10 members of the Senate and House of Representatives along with over nearly 50 organizations in the Twin Cities. Among a diverse array of supporting groups, the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota believe these bills will have positive health effects. "Safe roads support increased physical activity and better health by making it easier for people to get around on foot or by bike," Blue Cross and Blue Shield Representative Dr. Mark Manley stated. So far the "Complete Streets" bills require no funding, but will urge transportation projects in the future to consider the needs of all the users of our streets. The coalition aims to make streets safer for children, elderly, bikers, walkers, and families. "Complete streets in a nutshell will make Minnesota streets safer," DFL-Senator Tony Lourey said.
