FRIDLEY, Minn. - Students and staff at Totino Grace High School were evacuated Friday afternoon after what authorities are calling a minor mercury spill.
First responders were called to the school around 11:45 p.m. after someone found mercury from a broken thermometer spilled on the floor of a classroom in Totino's main building. Students and staff were evacuated according to an established emergency-disaster preparedness plan. The students were evacuated to the football and baseball fields.
Anoka County's Hazardous Materials Chemical Assessment Team and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency Emergency Response Team were called in to evaluate the seriousness of the situation and the potential health risks posed.
