OCEANSIDE, Cal. - NFL great Junior Seau is dead from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Police say they received a 9-1-1 call from Seau's girlfriend at 9:30 a.m. after she discovered his body in a bedroom of his home in Oceanside, California.
First responders arrived on the scene and immediately began lifesaving efforts but they were unsuccessful. Officers found a handgun near the body.
The 43-year-old Seau was an all-pro linebacker who played 20 years in the NFL, first for the San Diego Chargers, and then signing on for short stints with the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots.
A source told TMZ that Seau sent text messages to his three children and ex-wife on Tuesday telling them that he loved them. They reportedly responded, and didn't sense that anything was wrong.
Seau was a 10-time All-Pro, and made the Pro Bowl 12 times. He had encountered some problems after retirement, having been arrested for assaulting a girlfriend in 2010, and then drove his SUV off a cliff hours later.
