Graduating from high school was something Alice Sefkow of Sauk Rapids never had the opportunity to do as a teen-ager.

In the 1930?s, when Alice was a teen-ager, times were tough for her family of eight. Her father had died and her mother was struggling to feed and clothe the seven kids.

Alice was fortunate enough to find a job as a house cleaner. It paid 25 cents a week and provided her with a place to sleep. But she couldn?t work and go to high school, so she dropped out, knowing how vital that money was to her family.

But Alice never gave up her dream of graduating from high school and on Wednesday, that dream came true.

Alice Sefkow, just four weeks from her 87th birthday, received her diploma from the Central Minnesota Adult Basic Education program.

Sefkow?s grandchildren helped their grandmother reach this goal, by assisting her in enrolling at the center.

Now that she?s realized this dream, Alice says? she?ll begin work on her other lifelong dream, learning to play the organ her husband gave her many years ago.
