HASTINGS, Minn. - A judge sentenced a Northfield woman in connection with the death of her 17-month-old son.

Dakota County Attorney, James Backstrom says 21-year-old Melissa Ohmann failed to seek medical attention for her son, Nicholas Miller, after he was violently shaken by his stepfather, Tylar Hokanson, on June 19, 2009.

The boy became silent and motionless in the days following the June 19th attack.

Hokanson took Nicholas to his own family's home in Wisconsin where the child died on June 23, 2009. He never received medical treatment for the injuries, which caused bleeding in the brain and swelling consistent with violent shaking injuries. A medical examination also showed Nicholas had suffered a broken bone in his back during the same episode, resulting in fluid slowly filling his lungs.

On November 25, 2010, a jury convicted Hokanson of first and second degree murder and he received a life sentence.

On Thursday, a judge sentenced Ohmann to a year in jail, and ten years probation.
