MINNEAPOLIS - The Plymouth Avenue Bridge, which connects Northeast Minneapolis with the North Loop, reopens Monday morning.
"It's like a new day around here," says Patty Connelly, who lives nearby.
The 30-year old bridge closed in October of 2010 because an inspection revealed significant deterioration of cables that run through the bridge. Work began inside the bridge during the summer to replace the cables and remove and old concrete.
The reopening will start with one lane in each direction until November when all lanes will open.
For nearby Elsie's Restaurant and Bar, they've seen firsthand what a closure can do to customers.
"It's been slow," said Terri Fellegy, a server at Elsie's. "It takes away from business, but having it reopen will make it much easier to get here."
Prior to its closure, more than 14,000 vehicles used the bridge each day.
