GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - September is American Kennel Club's Responsible Dog Ownership Days. One of the main responsibilities as a pet owner is to keep pets healthy by providing them quality food, and ensuring they get the right amount of exercise and mental stimulation.

An estimated 54 percent of pets in the U.S. are overweight or obese. Jimmy Millard from Chuck & Don's Pet Food Outlet joined us with with tips on how to maintain pets' weight and keep them on the healthy track.

How can you tell if your pet is overweight/obese?

Evaluate the size of your pet and belly area. The belly should tuck up behind the rib cage. If it is a straight line or saggy area this could mean your pet is overweight.

If you can no longer feel your pet's ribs with gentle fingertip pressure, your pet may be carrying extra weight.
