GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn.- Here are a few quick reminders about using your GPS this holiday season, brought to you by Geek Squad Agent Derek Meisner.
1. Update your GPS maps so you will receive alerts about road closures and the newest routes
Most GPS systems require that you connect the device to a computer to download the latest maps. If you have any questions about updating your GPS, contact the Geek Squad. Also, set the GPS prior to leaving to become familiar with the directions before you hit the road.
If there is traffic or an accident, stay one step ahead by hitting the "detour" button. Not only will it seamlessly help you get from point A to point B, but it can even help you discover a new snack stop along the way.
When searching for your destination, try entering the name of the location, instead of the address. Many locations are organized in "points of interest" groups, so it will identify the place without the exact address. This mechanism will also allow you to learn more about the area that you are driving through. Add spontaneity to your trip by stopping to see a local attraction.
Make sure you have enough batteries or a car cigarette lighter available as a power source. A GPS' battery life can quickly decrease when continually searching for locations. Your smartphone can be your backup too.
Smartphone Saviors: It's official - smartphones are now silencing the age-old question from children of "Are we there yet?" Along with providing an estimated time of arrival, smartphones offer applications capable of entertaining kids for hours and keeping passengers content. Look in your smartphone's app store for apps that:
2. Recommend games to play while in the car
Search for apps that explain how to play classic road games, such as "I Spy" or "Where's the Alphabet?" If your kids want to play with the smartphone, look for a game that allows them to play each other by passing the phone back and forth. Try Road Trip Fun for iPhone ($0.99) or Family Car Games for Android ($1.99).
3. Locate restaurants based on your whereabouts, what kind of food they serve and the price range
You'll make everyone happy by giving them multiple options, while still keeping a budget in mind. The free Urbanspoon app for iPhone, Android and Blackberry is a good way to go!
4. Your GPS will notify you when you're coming up on a rest area
These apps will let you know if the next rest area is best for your family's needs (food, restroom, pet walking, etc.). Check out these free apps: Rest Area Finder for iPhone and Rest Stopper for Android. Sometimes, that quick stretch and a little fresh air are enough to make it the rest of the trip!
5. Saving Gas and Saving Cash
Make this holiday season the season of saving. Save gas, cash and the environment by following these tips, all while avoiding the never-ending line at the first gas station off the exit.
GPS systems give users the option to take the route that uses the least amount of gas. This can be crucial when your car is running low on fuel, and the next gas station is miles away. Also, this is an easy way to save money and stay within your budget.
Plus, some GPS units come with an eco-routing mode that takes you on the shortest and less heavily traveled route.
Beat the high prices at the pumps by using the free GasBuddy app for iPhone, Android and Blackberry to find the closest gas station with the lowest prices.
6. Save your money by protecting your valuables
Do NOT leave your GPS in plain view while your vehicle is unattended! Store your valuables in hidden or locked locations while away from your car. The temperature drops can also affect electronics, so if you are going in for the night, make sure to bring your GPS inside, too.
