Obama to recognize Punch Pizza in State of the Union

MINNEAPOLIS -- A local company will get a big shout out at Tuesday's State of the Union.

Punch Pizza says their business will be recognized by President Obama for investing in employees by creating a starting wage of $10 per hour.

Punch Pizza founder and co-owner John Soranno said they are honored for the recognition. He and employee Nick Chute will be guests of First Lady Michelle Obama.

"As we continue to grow Punch, we recognize that only the most dedicated employees will position us to compete and maintain the highest quality food and the best service in the market," said Soranno.

Minnesota's minimum wage was a hotly debated topic in 2013. The state has one of the nation's lowest minimum wages at $6.15 per hour, but most people earn the higher federal minimum of $7.25.

The Democratic-led House and Senate both passed bills to increase the minimum wage, but couldn't come to an agreement on how much.

Debate is expected to resume in 2014, and Dayton has said he's optimistic a bill will pass and be signed.
