MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- He was self-dubbed "The King of Almost" on NBC's hit reality show The Voice this past spring. And true to form, Minnesota's favorite son, singer/songwriter Tim Mahoney, almost beat out a much younger and much more female Casey Weston in what you might call the regional quarterfinals of the show. But at first, the judge who chose Mahoney for his team, Maroon 5 front man Adam Levine, created one of the show's most memorable moments when he actually did think Mahoney was female. "This is going to get weird," said Levine after turning his chair around when Mahoney sang Sam Cooke's "Bring it On Home to Me." "I thought you were a chick. And clearly, you have a penis."
Mahoney, of course, thought it was hilarious, and Levine added to the punch line by telling Mahoney that people say that about Levine's voice, too. But the eventual elimination was harder to take than the gender confusion. So Mahoney decided to do what he does best to make light of the situation-he wrote a song about Levine thinking he was "a chick." Called "Hey Adam Levine," Mahoney will release the song digitally on August 30, though he already has an acoustic version of it up on YouTube, and word has been spreading like wildfire online and through social media platforms.
"I wanted to write a song that's fun and talked about just a funny experience from The Voice," said Mahoney. "I actually thought the comment was great when Adam called me a chick. It was a huge PR boost and people remembered me right away--I'll take that any day." But Mahoney made it clear that he valued the experience of working with Levine on the show, adding, "I think Adam Levine is great. He was my first choice as a coach, even if he wasn't the only one who turned his chair around."
Hopefully, Levine will appreciate the tongue-in-cheek nature of the song and have as much fun with it as Mahoney did writing and recording it.
