Groovin' in the Garden

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Zoo & Conservatory closes at 6 p.m., but they're just starting to get Groovin' In The Gardens featuring some of Twin Cities finest musicians.

The public is invited to these free, family friendly outdoor concerts in front of the Visitor Center every Wednesday in August (& September 5) from 6 p.m-8 p.m.

They will provide lawn games, but visitors are free to bring their own. On August 8, 22, 27 & September 5 they will also have a climbing wall.

Visitors are encouraged to spread a blanket on the lawn, pack a picnic basket and bring their dancing shoes. Food, beer, wine & cocktails will be available to purchase.

The Detroit Don King Blues Band features Don King-Guitar/Vocals, Dan Emerson-Bass, Doug Hill-Drums and Tall Paul from Chicago-Saxophone. Detroit Don has a soulful voice and style reminiscent of BB King.

Crankshaft & the Gear Grinders

Crankshaft has been forging his own brand of high-energy, low-brow music, a new genre he likes to call "Pork Neck" since 2008. This is a new breed of foot stompin' country blues that appeals to young and old alike that "could not have been imagined prior to the early punk scene," as recently described by Dig In Magazine.

The 617 Band's innovative interpretation of Latin‚ contemporary jazz‚ and R&B roots seem to keep every performance fresh‚ interesting‚ and fun. Each member brings a different style and interpretation to each performance. Repertoire includes original music‚ jazz standards‚ and vocal stylings from reggae‚ blues‚ and jazz.

The Rockin' Pinecones

The Rockin' Pinecones play rootsy New Orleans-style R&B, with a little Cajun and Zydeco added for extra spice. The quintet covers hits and obscurities by many of Louisiana greats. The Pinecones are dedicated to filling the dance-halls and juke-joints of the northland with the sweet sounds of the French Quarter and the bayou.

This program was funded in part or in whole with money from the vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008 which dedicated funding to preserve Minnesota's art and cultural heritage.
