ST CLOUD, Minn. - A teen is recovering after undergoing surgery after she suffered severe hypothermia when she spent the night outside in subzero temperatures.
Police say 19-year-old Alyssa Jo Lommel had been out drinking with friends Dec. 6 and was dropped off at her Duluth house around midnight. A passer-by spotted Lommel on her front stoop about nine hours later.
In an update on Alyssa's CaringBridge page, her mother Teri stated that her daughter's surgery went well. She remains in the burn unit at Regions Hospital, but is no longer an ICU patient.
Doctors amputated the tips of her toes on one foot, and up to the ball of the foot on the other.
Teri stated that they are concerned about Alyssa's heels, which have more damage than they initially thought. According to Teri, surgery on her hands is expected in two weeks.
A fund has been set up for her at Bremer Bank in St. Cloud.
