KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Twins have claimed outfielder Sam Fuld off waivers from Oakland and designated outfielder Darin Mastroianni for assignment.
Fuld is not due to join Minnesota until its game Tuesday at Tampa Bay, leaving the club one player short for its series finale against the Royals on Sunday.
Fuld was hitting .200 with a homer and four RBIs in seven games for the Athletics. He had spent parts of the previous three seasons with Tampa Bay after breaking in with the Chicago Cubs.
"He can play anywhere in the outfield. He's a leadoff-type guy. He can fly. He can steal bases. He's one of those little guys who is a tough, tough out," said Twins manager Ron Gardenhire.
Gardenhire said that he has always appreciated the Fuld as a player.
"We've always like him going against us. And we saw him earlier this year, but now we've got him with us, and we're very excited. He's our type of player."
The A's designated Fuld for assignment April 12.
Mastroianni has been with the Twins for parts of the past three seasons. He was 0 for 11 in 12 plate appearances over seven games this year.
