ATLANTA - Police say a student was shot at Price Middle School near the Lakewood Heights neighborhood just south of downtown Atlanta.
First responders say the victim was alert, conscious and breathing despite being shot through the neck. Grady Memorial Hospital confirms they have received one juvenile gunshot victim.
A teacher suffered cuts and bruises when she was trampled by students who were scrambling for the exits after hearing gunshots.
One parents on the scene told WXIA television that a group of students from another school came onto the Price campus and opened fire on students that they were feuding with. That version of events has not been confirmed.
Price Middle School has been placed on lockdown and parents are being asked not to come to the school to avoid additional confusion in the area.
Televised helicopter images show dozens of squads and emergency vehicles at the school building on the south side of Atlanta.
The neighborhood where the school is located is in what was once the Carver Homes Housing Project. The projects were razed and replaced with homes and apartments. Price Middle School and Carver High School were both built in recent years in the same area.
