PINE CITY, Minn. - Emergency crews have resumed searching for a missing snowmobiler who went through the ice on the St. Croix River Saturday evening.

Authorities say the they received a report around 6:41 p.m. Saturday that a snowmobiler had fallen through the ice on the St. Croix River east of Pine City, about four miles north of the Soderbeck River Landing.

According to the Pine County Sheriff's Office, crews found a partially submerged snowmobile on the edge of a large open area of turbulent water, but were unable to locate the victim. 

Riders who were accompanying the victim say the group of three was riding on the river in the dark when the victim hit a large patch of open water.  They say the driver was thrown from the snowmobile and disappeared into the river.

Authorities believe the rider was swept downstream and under the ice pack.

The Pine County Sheriff's Office says that dangerous river conditions have prevented responders from entering the water, but an extensive search was conducted on foot, by snowmobile and by State Patrol Helicopter.

The name of the victim has not been released.

Earlier Saturday, a 22-year-old man was snowmobiling on the St. Croix River near Bayport when he fell through the ice. That man was believed to be in the water for nearly 20 minutes before being rescued. He was transported to Regions Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
