OAKDALE, Minn. - A 65-year-old Oakdale woman is dead after a fire inside her townhome early Tuesday.
First responders were dispatched to a townhome complex on the 7000 block of 19th Street shortly after 5 a.m. after a resident reported smelling smoke inside of his townhouse.
Officers arrived and noticed smoke pouring from a nearby unit. They forced entry into the townhome and discovered the victim, identified as 65-year-old Catherine A. Weschcke, in a second-floor bedroom already deceased. Fire crews quickly extinguished the blaze.
Weschcke was a longtime teacher and media specialist with the Stillwater Public School District. A release from the district says she joined the Stillwater Public Schools in 1998, and taught at Rutherford, Andersen, Stonebridge and Lake Elmo elementary schools.
At this point there is no official cause for the blaze and the victim has not been identified.
The fire is under investigation by the Oakdale Fire Department and the state's Fire Marshal's office.
