APPLE VALLEY, Minn. - The Minnesota Zoo announced the hatching of its first endangered African penguin chick.

The chick hatched March 2 although the gender of the chick is not yet known. It is currently being raised behind the scenes by foster parents because the biological parents were not incubating the egg consistently. Because of this, Zoo officials decided to give the chick to an "experienced pair."

The chick is doing well and has grown from 2.4 ounces to over 1 pound 6 ounces.

The 3M Penguins of the African Coast exhibit opened at the zoo in 2011.
