MINNEAPOLIS - The motorist who died Monday night when his car careened into the Mississippi River has been identified.
Officials at North Central University say the victim is Darron Luhrsen, a third-year student at the school.
Minneapolis Police say Luhrsen was driving along West River Parkway near Mill Ruins Park at about 9:45 p.m. when he veered off the road, through a fence and into the river.
Multiple search and dive teams were called in to pull him from the submerged vehicle, but the rescue soon turned into a mission of recovery.
"Darron was a standout student and good friend to many at NCU," said Michael White, V.P. of University Relations. "The school joins his family and loved ones in grieving at the news of this promising young student's life cut short, a true tragedy."
The school says it will offer counseling to anyone wishing to talk about this tragic event and process the news of Darron's death. Plans for a memorial service are also underway.
Police aren't saying what may have sent Luhrsen's car plunging into the river.
