MINNEAPOLIS - Modern streetcars could soon be coming to Minneapolis.
A city transportation committee approved a plan that would take a starter route from 5th Street NE down Nicollet Avenue to Lake Street.
City leaders said streetcars have a history of providing an increase in ridership and greater economic impact.
"There's a lot of interest in upgrading transit along Nicollet Mall, in particular, to get something that people who use this LRT line to hop off and get on a streetcar, go to the convention center and really use more of downtown," said Peter Wagenious, the mayor's police director.
The street car option beat out a less expensive bus route expansion.
The proposal will now go to the full city council for a vote.
