MINNEAPOLIS - Adrian Peterson fans are calling for an end to child abuse after the tragic death of Peterson's 2-year-old son.
Another man, the mother's boyfriend, has been arrested in the case.
A TMZ.com report Saturday said that Peterson only recently learned he was the boy's father and first met the child at the hospital.
Meanwhile, people are holding vigils for the little boy both in Minnesota and in South Dakota where he lived with his mother.
There will be a candlelight vigil at 8p.m. Saturday outside the Metrodome.
When Ismary McCarty of Roseville heard Friday that Peterson lost one of his sons, and that South Dakota police believe he died of injuries inflicted by the mother's boyfriend, she couldn't just stand by. She picked up some candles and started planning a vigil.
"It just struck a chord with me, being that I'm a mother, I have children and there are many people across the country that are struggling with domestic violence," said McCarty. "It's something that needs to be brought [to] light."
McCarty and her friends will gather at 5th and Chicago outside the Dome not only to honor the 2-year-old, but to also support Peterson and the boy's mother.
"My heart goes out to both of them. I can't even imagine losing a child. I have four children myself and that weighs heavy on me," said McCarty.
A similar vigil was held Friday night in Sioux Falls.
Sioux Falls resident Jessica White said, "Just looking at the people around, you can see the pain on some people's faces. And with me, I didn't know the family at all, but I have two small children, and just the fact that they could be there one morning and then gone the next it's just, it's devastating."
The Sioux Falls vigil drew about 125 people. McCarty isn't sure how many will show up in Minneapolis on Saturday night.
Fans have been posting pictures of Peterson and a son on Facebook and Twitter. That is not the son who passed away.
Peterson tweeted on Saturday that Adrian Junior, who lives with him, is healthy. He respectfully asks fans to stop tweeting pictures. He also tweeted he is currently not sharing pictures of the other son.
