NEW YORK - Stocks are drifting between small gains and losses in midday trading as investors focused on Europe's debt situation.

The 17 countries that use the euro are struggling over what to do if Greece leaves the union, and how much they should do to try to prevent that.

Trading was light ahead of the Memorial Day weekend.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 33 points to 12,495. It has been on a steady slide this month, giving up most of the gains it notched in the first quarter. It's heading for its first losing month since September.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index was up less than a point to 1,321, and the Nasdaq composite fell less than a point to 2,838.
