MINNEAPOLIS -- Sunday's heat didn't stop people from enjoying outdoor activities, with temperatures settling in the 90's.

The Twins and their fans faced the hottest outing of the year. Target Field have about a dozen free water stations throughout the park.

"At any one time we'll have 8,000 to 10,000 people meandering to staying cool," Kevin Smith said from the Minnesota Twins.

Smith says about a dozen first aid crews kept an extra eye out, monitoring the fans.

"Our early spring wasn't very good as far as weather," Smith said. "People were fantasizing about some heat. This might be extreme, we're expecting a full crowd. I'm smelling a lot of sunscreen through the concourse."

Other types of sports fans were at Lake Calhoun for the 72nd annual Aquatennial. Sunday's activities included a sandcastle building contest and milk carton boat race.

"It's sweltering hot out here right now," Nicholas Cowan said.

Cowan is a first time sandcastle builder. He watched a couple videos the last week to prepare for the tournament.

"It's called a modern fairy tale, using a lot of triangles," Cowan said as he worked on his castle.

In the water, people kept cool, as milk carton boat races happened in the near distance.

"We have teams that have built boats out of milk cartons to see who's the fastest," Aquatennial Director Leah Wong said. "And we judge for creativity."
