WABASHA COUNTY, Minn. -- The outpouring of support continues for a Lake City police officer who was shot in the line of duty.
Officer Shawn Schneider remains in critical condition after the suspect, Alan Sylte Junior, shot him in the head after a domestic disturbance. Police say Sylte later killed himself.
More than a week after it happened, small town communities are doing big time things. "You're thinking what can I do to help," said Rich Hall. "This is a fallen comrade in our county who is in need right now."
Hall is the mayor of Elgin and a volunteer fire fighter for the town. He's in a fantasy football league with Schneider who he met while working as a corrections officer for Wabasha County.
After the shooting, he and his fellow fire fighters had to do something.
"We know that we can't help with the pain and suffering that the family is going through, but maybe we can ease their burden financially a little bit for them," he said.
It's bingo night at the Huddle Bar and Grill. The proceeds normally go to the fire department, instead they'll go to the Schneider family. "We're hoping for big things tonight," he said.
The bar's co-owner, Dawn Barrett is expecting a big crowd after getting constant phone calls of support. "It looks like the word is coming out and people are coming so I'm very happy about that," she said.
And that's just in Elgin. About 25 minutes away, back in Lake City, Dawn Finley and her daughter-in-law will be raising money on Monday at their salon, Roots Hair Studio.
"Every business seems to be contributing and doing something for the community," said Finley. "100 percent of our proceeds will go to the Schneider family. We're going to do ten dollar hair cuts for the whole day."
Wednesday night's fundraiser is at the Huddle Bar and Grill and starts at 6:30 p.m.
There is another fundraiser Thursday in Lake City at the VFW from 5 p.m to 8 p.m.
And finally, the fundraiser at Roots Hair Studio goes from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday.
