Soup cook-off at Midtown Global Market

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - In honor of National Soup Month, Saturday, Jan. 21, Midtown Global Market will host the fifth annual Global Soup Cook-Off featuring a wide variety of original soups crafted by Midtown Global Market chefs.

Joining KARE 11 News @4, Midtown Global Market spokesperson Kim Hanna and MGM chef Jamal Hashi.

Jamal's Saffron Chicken Soup from Safari Express

Ingredients
½ minced onion
1 clove garlic minced
½ tsp crushed chili peppers
½ tsp cumin
½ tsp saffron
2 cloves
3 oz of red peppers or ½ pepper
1 package of green peas
3 cups of chicken broth over water
3 fresh basil leaves, chopped
4 oz coconut cream
Spinach (as needed)
Cilantro (as needed)

Preparation
In large pot, brown onions and garlic until fragrant. Then add in crushed chili peppers, cumin, saffron and cloves. Sautee for 30 seconds. Then add red peppers and green peas. Then mix in chicken broth, chopped basil and coconut cream. Let this simmer for 30 minutes. Garnish with spinach and cilantro. Enjoy!

Saturday's event is open to the public. A donation of $3 per person is suggested with proceeds benefiting Perspectives' Kids Café, a nutrition and self-esteem program providing mentoring and educational opportunities for high-risk and homeless youth living in the Twin Cities.

Guests will receive a wrist band upon entering the cook-off, and each participating MGM vendor will provide soup samples at their respective restaurants.
Visitors will return to the check-in table and can cast their vote for their favorite for the coveted "People's Choice Award."

All the ingredients in each soup can be purchased within the Market.
