GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. -- Robin Johnson from Sweet Retreat shared this recipe for Valentine's Day with KARE 11 News @4.

Glitter Heart Valentine's Cupcake

Tools and supplies needed:

  • Cake mix
  • Prepared frosting
  • Readymade fondant
  • Red disco dust
  • Powdered sugar
  • Rolling pin
  • Large cookie cutter
  • Heart shaped cookie cutter
  • Red food coloring
  • Pastry brush
  • Mini spatula
  • Paint brush

Pick your favorite cake mix flavor and prepare the batter as instructed for cupcakes. Once cooled, use a small spatula and mound butter cream icing on top of a cupcake. Smooth it into a small dome shape.

Place it in the refrigerator for about 5 minutes. While it is in there, roll out readymade fondant. Fondant can be found in any craft or cake store. With a rolling pin, roll the fondant out on a surface that has been sprinkled with powdered sugar. The powdered sugar keeps the fondant from sticking. Roll it until it is about 1/8 of an inch thick.

Cut out with a 3-inch round cookie cutter and brush any extra sugar on the fondant with the pastry brush. Place the cut out fondant on top of the chilled cupcake and smooth over it. To make the heart, take red food coloring and knead it into the white fondant until color is blended through.

Then roll out the red fondant to about 1/8th thickness and cut it out with a heart shaped cutter and brush any extra powdered sugar from the heart with a pastry brush. Use a small paint brush to brush a light coating of water on the heart, then sprinkle the heart with the red disco dust.

Before you place the heart on the cupcake, brush a small amount of water on the white fondant then place the heart on top. Enjoy!
