MONTROSE, Minn. - The Minnesota State Patrol says two people are dead after a vehicle veered off a highway in Wright County and struck a child waiting for a school bus.
State Patrol spokesman Lt. Eric Roeske told KARE 11 that a 7-year-old boy waiting for a school bus on the sidewalk near his grandmother's house on Highway 12 was struck and killed just after 8 a.m.
A family member tells KARE 11 the boy's name is Hayden Solien.
Roeske said a Ford Taurus ran a red light while traveling westbound on Hwy. 12 near Hwy. 25 when it went up on the sidewalk and struck the 2nd grade boy. Roeske said the boy landed several hundred feet from where he was struck.
The 47-year-old male driver of the car also died. He was from Arlington, Minn.
Authorities said there was no evidence the driver was impaired.
The victims' names have not been released.
Roeske said the boy attended school in a different town. That school's principal was notifying students Friday morning about the news.
The school bus was moments away from the bus stop. It is not known whether other students were on board when the bus arrived at the scene.
Montrose is about 35 miles west of the Twin Cities.
