MINNEAPOLIS - The Minneapolis City Council sent an unmistakeable message Friday, voting unanimously today to oppose a proposed state constitutional amendment that would ban marriage for same-sex couples in Minnesota.

Mayor R.T. Rybak says he will sign the measure, which also urges Minnesotans to vote "no" on the amendment this November.

As part of Friday's action Mayor Rybak and City Council approved a resolution voicing the City's opposition to the proposed amendment.

In 1991 Minneapolis became the first city in Minnesota to approve a domestic partnership registry, and  since that time an average of more than 160 couples a year have registered their domestic partnerships in the city.

"We took this step because it is critical that every person in Minneapolis can make a commitment to the person they love," said Mayor R.T. Rybak.

The council was unwavering in their support for the action.

"The City Council spoke with a unified voice today to call for a Minnesota where all families are treated fairly," said City Council Member Elizabeth Glidden. "Minneapolis has a long history of embracing diversity, and we're a stronger community for it."
