MINNEAPOLIS - A man was found shot to death inside a Minneapolis hotel room early Saturday morning. It's the first homicide for the city this year.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office said 33-year-old Jeremy Robert Shannon of Minneapolis was shot several times and killed.
It all happened around 2:30 Saturday morning in a room at the Millennium Hotel on the 1300 block of the Nicollet Mall.
The suspect, Minneapolis Police said, was arrested at another hotel, the Hyatt, across the street.
Police spokesperson, Sgt. Stephen McCarty, said the room where the shooting happened was on one of the upper floors of the Millennium Hotel.
Shannon was pronounced dead when emergency crews arrived. Witnesses then told police a suspect had run across the street to the Hyatt.
KARE has video of a man being led away from the Hyatt in handcuffs. It is unclear at this point if the video is of the suspect or another man being taken in for questioning. But McCarty said police did arrest a 33-year-old suspect at the Hyatt. He has been booked on probably cause murder into the Hennepin County Jail.
McCarty said it sounds like the parties involved possibly knew each other. He does not believe there is a threat to the public.
That was reassuring for hotel guest Candy Butterfield of Minong, Wisconsin. She said, "When I started hearing all the sirens I did go to the window and saw the police cars all over the place. Then this morning we heard there had been a shooting in the hotel."
McCarty said, "Our downtown area is pretty safe relative to other cities our size. And I'd categorize it at this point as an isolated incident."
While it may be isolated, the investigation into the shooting continues.
Police believe there may have been a number of people who witnessed what led up to the shooting and they would like anyone with information to call in to the Minneapolis Police Tips line at 612-692-TIPS.
Police have released the name of the 33-year-old suspect, but KARE generally does not identify suspects until they have been officially charged, which in this case could happen as soon as Monday.
