MINNEAPOLIS - It will be a summer of challenges for Matt Call.
"I don't know exactly when I'll be able to walk again," he says. "But I'm surrounded by amazing people."
As Call continues his recovery at the Hennepin County Medical Center, he chooses not to focus on the hit and run incident that nearly took his life, rather Matt smiles, even laughs, and considers himself blessed.
"I'm lucky to be alive," he says. "If you focus on the negativity, that's all you're going to get."
The incident, on Wednesday, June 27, left Matt with two broken femur bones, a cracked pelvis, cracked vertebrae, and lung contusions.
He had just left his workplace, at the Urban Bean coffee shop on Lyndale Avenue South and 24th Street and was about to open his car door when an SUV struck him, throwing him 20-30 feet.
"All I remember is hitting the concrete. It happened very quickly," he recalls. "It was intense pain."
The driver of the vehicle fled the scene. Doctors say the SUV was traveling roughly 50 mph.
"I forgive that person," said Matt. "I choose not be angry."
Police do have a good look at the vehicle and the suspect. A nearby camera caught images of the black Jeep Cherokee just seconds before the incident.
However, despite the pictures, police have had very few leads, but are looking for a way to enhance the photos in hopes it leads to more information. Those with any leads are asked to contact Minneapolis Police at 612-673-2981.
Meanwhile, Matt is expected to make a full recovery, but will likely need the assistance of a wheel chair for several months. The 24-year old is a well-known barista and musician in the Twin Cities and looks forward to getting back on his feet.
"I can't wait to work a shift and make a latte," he chuckles. "I'm very blessed."
A benefit and a fund have been set up to help Matt and his family.
