NORTH BRANCH, Minn. - At least two law enforcement officers are on paid leave after a man was fatally shot Sunday night following an apparent domestic disturbance.

A North Branch police squad was dispatched to the home near 381st Street and Feaski Circle just before 9:30 p.m. after a report of at least one shot fired.

Chisago County deputies arrived at the address to help secure the scene. At that time officers saw a man leaving the garage, apparently carrying a gun.

"They observed a male party exit the garage with a firearm," Chisago County Sheriff Rick Duncan told reporters. "At that time officers felt their lives were threatened and at that point fired and shot the male party who was airlifted to the hospital."

Despite efforts on the scene and by paramedics in the helicopter the man later was pronounced dead at Regions Hospital.

One Chisago County Deputy fired his weapon. Duncan says that deputy and at least one other officer were immediately placed on administrative leave, which is routine following an officer-involved shooting.

A woman was home at the time the initial shot was reported to police, but authorities say she was not injured. Investigators are talking to her as a witness.

The BCA is processing the scene and assisting in the investigation.
