HASTINGS, Minn. - A 64-year-old Eagan day care provider faces multiple charges in connection to the death a child in her care in August 2011.
Beverly Anne Greenagel faces two counts of manslaughter in the second-degree and one count each of endangerment of a child, neglect of a child and interference with a death scene in connection with the death, all in the case of 3 and a half-month-old Dane Ableidinger, authorities said.
Greenagel put the baby down for a nap on the afternoon of Aug. 18, according to the Dakota County Attorney's Office. The baby was later found unresponsive by a 12-year-old child also at the day care facility who noticed that he was on his stomach and did not appear to be breathing, officials said.
Paramedics and police were immediately called and efforts to resuscitate the child were unsuccessful, authorities said.
Greenagel initially told police that the infant had been placed in the crib for his nap, but later changed her story and said she had placed the child down for a nap on top of a folded blanket on the floor, authorities said.
State records show that Greenagel was licensed to care for up to 12 people, but she had 20 children in her care on that day, including three infants.
Officials from the Dakota County Attorney's Office said that Greenagel had been providing licensed day care since 1976. They said her day care license was suspended immediately after this incident and later revoked, which Greenagel is challenging in civil court.
The Dakota County Medical Examiner initially was unable to determine a cause for Ableidinger's death, but later ruled death was the result of "probable positional asphyxia."
Greenagel made her first appearance in on Wednesday. Bail was set in the amount of $75,000.
