EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. - A vintage Russian fighter jet crashed at Flying Cloud Airport in Eden Prairie Thursday morning.

A spokesperson for the City of Eden Prairie says the plane, a MiG 21 jet, went off the runway as the pilot attempted to land just after 10 a.m.

Reports from the scene say the Russian fighter plane ended up about a quarter mile from the end of the runway, just outside the airport fence.

"We heard him make a couple of passes. He used the after burner one time," shared witness Bob Haueter. "As I understand it, he just ran out of runway and once he hit the chain link fence it tore up the nose cone and spun the aircraft around. The gear looks pretty much in tact and he's fine. I guess all is well that ends well."

Eden Prairie spokesperson Katie Beal said the plane's parachute deployed but collapsed.

The pilot reportedly suffered only minor injuries in the crash and was not transported for treatment.

At least one lane of Flying Cloud Drive will likely be closed for hours as investigators from the FAA and NTSB go over the airplane. At this point it is not clear what led to the crash.

The MiG was manufactured in 1975 and is registered to William Ward of Ann Arbor, Michigan. It may be in town as part of the 2012 Air Expo, which takes place this weekend at Flying Cloud.
