MENOMONIE, Wis. - Following Monday's fatal crash on Interstate 94 near Hudson, officials with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and the State Patrol are doing what they can to prevent another fatal accident.
"We're trying to help minimize these crashes," said Sgt. Michael Newton with the Wisconsin State Patrol. "You hate to see anyone lose their life in these crashes especially young people."
Monday's accident on claimed the lives of 17-year-old Josh Goodrich and 16-year old Jordan Johnson after the vehicle they were in rear-ended a semi truck. The crash took place as cars slowed down for a construction project ahead.
"In construction zones, a lot of our crashes are rear-end accidents caused by inattentive driving," said Sgt. Newton. "Drivers are coming up on nearly stopped traffic."
It's the main reason why officials are increasing signage in the area and upping the presence of law enforcement to send the "slow down" message to motorists.
"Even if this is your daily commute, you have to pay attention," stressed Sgt. Newton. "Things are constantly changing."
The project is a total reconstruction of the crossovers and bridges and is expected to be completed by 2014.
Meanwhile, a vigil is planned for Sunday night for the two teenagers lost in Monday's accident.
