DULUTH, Minn. - Motorists traveling on Interstate 35 between Duluth and the Twin Cities Metro Area during Labor Day weekend will encounter two single-lane construction work zones that could delay their holiday fun.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) warns motorists that they can expect delays of up to one hour or more during peak travel times, especially during holiday weekends or weekends when major events are scheduled.

Peak traffic levels on I-35 occur between noon and 8 p.m. Fridays, and between noon and 6 p.m. on Sundays. Motorists can avoid congestion by traveling during off-peak times or by taking an alternate route.

Carlton/Pine County Highway 61 and Highway 23 are alternate routes that bypass the two major work zones on I-35 north of Hinckley.

Once completed, MnDOT says the I-35 project will help preserve infrastructure and provide a smoother, safer driving surface for motorists.
