WOODBURY, Minn. - Police confirm one person is dead following an officer-involved shooting and hostage situation in Woodbury early Friday.
Police were alerted to a criminal situation at the Red Roof Inn off Valley Creek Road and I-494 around 1:10 a.m. on what Woodbury Police Chief Lee Vague describes as an open 911 call. Vague says a dispatcher heard sounds of a struggle and the presence of a weapon.
When officers responded to the hotel they located the room where several people were being assaulted and there, Vague says, a suspect pointed a weapon at officers and a shot was fired.
At that point three Woodbury officers responded by pulling their weapons and firing at the suspect. That man was shot multiple times and was rushed to Regions Hospital, where he died from his injuries.
A standoff situation ensued, with a number of people inside the hotel room being taken hostage by at least one man. After a tense standoff that lasted around four hours, members of the Washington County SWAT team took the man into custody around 5:30 a.m.
Police say a number of weapons were recovered from the hotel room. Some of those inside were treated for injuries suffered during the unspecified criminal activity.
While the hostage situation stretched on, authorities scrambled to evacuate the Red Roof Inn. Guests were chased out of their beds into the night.
Police say they are trying to sort through a complex situation. A BCA spokesman says there were 12 people inside the room when police responded, a mixture of suspects, victims and witnesses.
"We know there was a lot of criminal activity that was going on inside that hotel room, serious criminal activity," said Chief Vague.
One SWAT officer suffered minor injuries during the tactical operation, but otherwise no one was hurt.
All 3 officers who discharged their weapons have been placed on administrative leave, routine procedure following an officer involved shooting.
"I trust their judgement, and know them to be good cops," Vague shared. "Obviously this is a tough day for us, a situation we never like to have."
