BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. - A very storied piece of land in Brooklyn Center now has a new tenant.
The doors opened Wednesday morning at the new Walmart where the Brookdale Center Mall used to sit. The mall was torn down last year.
Walmart says the store will create 300 new jobs in the area and will be open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
WalMart is the main anchor of the new "Shingle Creek Crossing" development that will also feature retailers and restaurants in 15 other buildings. Brooklyn Center Mayor Tim Willson says construction on 3 of the other properties will begin this Fall, including an L.A. Fitness. He estimates the entire project will be complete in 3 or 4 years.
KARE 11's Bryan Piatt spoke with Mayor Willson live on KARE 11 Sunrise about future plans for the city and what's being done to curb criminal activity that plagued the Brookdale Center Mall.
