MINNEAPOLIS - The new Uptown Theatre will reopen in Minneapolis on Friday night after undergoing a $2 million renovation.

The Minneapolis movie house had been closed for six months.

Gone are the old seats, now replaced with more spacious seats and two-person sofas. Also gone is the old projector which was swapped out for digital equipment. And there's a new screen which is 40 percent larger than the previous one.

While so much of the Uptown is new, historic elements remain both inside and out.

"The chandeliers are original, much of the mural work inside the theatre is original, the exterior of the theatre, which is the most historic part of it, looks fantastic," said Hugh Wronski, of Landmark Theatres. "The tower has a beacon on it that works for the first time in many years."

The lounge will offer gourmet concessions and alcoholic beverages. And the bathrooms have also been upgraded.
