One of the Republican appointees to the Electoral College has resigned abruptly from her post after publicly questioning whether she would support the GOP's presidential ticket when casting official votes after the November election.

Republican officials in Iowa announced Thursday the resignation of Melinda Wadsley of Ames, Iowa. She did not return messages from The Associated Press to discuss the resignation.

Wadsley was among three electors who had told The Associated Press for a story published earlier in the day that they were exploring alternatives should Mitt Romney win their states. Wadsley had backed candidate Ron Paul.

Iowa GOP Chairman A.J. Spiker said the process would begin for selecting a new presidential elector from the Fourth District, which would allow the GOP to confirm a die-hard Romney supporter.
